The Benefits of Biking

FITDC3 is encouraging you to get off the couch, go outside, and help us celebrate National Bike Month by joining one of our many cycling initiatives this May! Biking has a huge number of benefits, that not only keep your body in top shape but feed your mind and improve your community. A real FITDC3 approved activity!

Relieves Stress

Biking, along with all forms of exercise, is a great way to relieve the stresses of D.C. living. Physical activity promotes the release of endorphins, improves energy levels, and helps you get a better night’s sleep. It also decreases the release of stress hormones, helping you achieve your ultimate level of ZEN.

Easy on your Joints

If life has taken a toll on your joints in the past, biking may be a great way for you to get a cardio workout while still being kind to those knees. Just make sure you are riding a bike that is the correct size for your height, and stretch ahead of time!

Great for Your Balance, Posture, and Coordination

When you think of balance, you think of things like Yoga and Pilates right? Well, biking can have the same benefits as hitting that tree pose. Biking helps to increase and strengthen your core, as well as your arms and legs, and in turn your balance. The act of sitting and pedaling also improves your balance and coordination. Finally, you must have great posture to cycle safely and correctly!

Heart Healthy

Regular cardiovascular activity, like cycling, helps to lower blood pressure, regulate blood sugar, and may prevent heart attacks. Regularly riding helps your heart become more efficient at pumping blood and increases your good cholesterol levels by lowering the bad cholesterol in your system. All in all, your heart gives riding two thumbs up!

It’s Great for the Environment

In a city that has a reputation for terrible traffic, biking reduces your carbon footprint and is the most environmentally friendly way to get around! The hidden bonus- you never have to wait for a delayed bus or look for a parking spot.

Build Muscle, Burn Fat

The resistance element of cycling means that not only do you burn fat, you also build muscles, particularly around the glutes, hamstrings, quads, and calves. Muscle is much leaner than fat, and having a higher percentage of muscle means that your body burns more calories even when resting.

Improve Your Lung Strength and Immune System Too

Though always important, there is never a better time to improve your lung function and immune system! Exercise helps to increase the production of essential proteins that kick those virus-killing white blood cells into gear, giving your immune system a facelift. The cardiovascular activity also has a very positive effect on your upper respiratory health, thus reducing the instances and the severity of infections. Also, staying outdoors and off of public transportation means more fresh air and less contact with others!
